Dual diagnosis is a circumstance in which two independent disorders are present, and most typically describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help someone who might not have been able to be helped before, end drug or alcohol abuse by being properly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated that may have triggered and led to their substance abuse issues. Establishing the truth that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish a highly effective treatment course for them, but will also help clients better understand what caused their substance abuse and ways to prevent it later on. Handling dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support and also continued treatment services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person will have to be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in reality many people who have a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
