Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone that may not have been capable of being helped in the past, put an end to substance abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly which could have triggered and resulted in their substance abuse issues. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an efficient treatment plan for them, but will also help clients better understand what triggered their drug use and the way to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis might need to participate in an extensive aftercare program which can include proper medical support in addition to further treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person should be medicated through out their lives either, and in fact many individuals who have a dual diagnosis experience more effective results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are utilized.
