Criminal justice clients are those who are in any type of alcohol and drug treatment program due to a drug or alcohol related crime. This will occur for example if a person is convicted of driving under the influence or DWI, or for any other type of drug related crime that has led the court to think that the individual has any kind of drug or alcohol use issue. Not every person has the option of getting involved in an alcohol and drug treatment center as a criminal justice client, but if this option is ordered by the court it is strongly advised that the individual do everything they are able to to take full advantage of this chance. In many cases, other penalties and consequences might be completely eliminated or lessened when the individual succeeds in rehabilitation and finishes the drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that has been ordered for them. First-time offenders are the most likely criminal justice clients because it has been determined that criminal justice clients who do take part in rehab instead of other consequences have much lower recidivism rates than people who find themselves ordered to prison time or receive other penalties. Eventually, it saves the court system both time and money when criminal justice clients obtain effective rehabilitation.
