DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in alcohol and drug rehab programs are either there by their own choice, but most of the time in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders may be ordered to treatment either in place of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been verified that people who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have far better chances of remaining out from the courts than people who find themselves fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to enable them to address these issues in order to find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their substance abuse.
