DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are either there on their own accord, but more often than not in alcohol and drug rehabilitation due to a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders might be required to go to treatment either in place of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment rather than being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have far better chances of staying out of the courts than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This may truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their substance abuse when they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future. It is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
