Dual diagnosis is a circumstance in which two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help a person that may not have been able to be helped previously, put an end to substance abuse because they can be properly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that may have prompted and resulted in their drug abuse problems. Establishing the fact someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but may also help clients better know what led to their drug use and how to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and individuals with a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support along with further rehab services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the individual should be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in reality many individuals who have a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
