Burke - Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis is a circumstance whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone that might possibly not have been capable of being helped in the past, end substance abuse because they can be accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly which may have prompted and led to their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the fact that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish a highly effective treatment course for them, but can also help clients better determine what triggered their substance abuse and how to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis may need to take part in an extensive aftercare program that might include appropriate medical support as well as continued treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person will have to be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in reality a lot of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are employed.
