DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders could possibly be ordered to treatment either instead of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. It has been verified that those who are treated for substance abuse issues rather than other penalties being enforced upon them have far better chances of staying out of the court system than people who find themselves fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these problems and find resolution for the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which prompt their drug abuse. This will truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their substance abuse when they drive while under the influence later on.
