DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs are generally there by their own choice, but usually in drug and alcohol rehab due to a mandated order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be required to go to rehabilitation either in place of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehab rather than being punished for their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being forced upon them have greater odds of remaining out of the courts than those people who are fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these problems and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This can truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their drug abuse if they drive while under the influence down the road. It is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
