DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are either there by their own choice, but generally in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be required to go to rehab either instead of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from treatment rather than being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that people who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have greater chances of staying out from the courts than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This will certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be impacted by their substance abuse if they drive while under the influence later on.
