DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in alcohol and drug treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but usually in drug and alcohol rehabilitation due to a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically initial offenders could be ordered to rehab either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from rehab rather than being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have far better odds of remaining out of the court system than those who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which set off their substance abuse. This can truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their substance abuse whenever they drive while under the influence down the road. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
