DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in drug and alcohol treatment programs are generally there on their own accord, but generally in drug and alcohol rehabilitation as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be ordered to treatment either in place of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from rehabilitation as an alternative to being punished for their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better odds of remaining out from the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This may truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be impacted by their substance abuse should they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future. This is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
