DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders might be required to go to treatment either in place of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. It has been proven that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better odds of remaining out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these issues and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances in their lives which prompt their drug or alcohol use. This can certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their drug abuse if they drive while intoxicated down the road.
