DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug and alcohol treatment programs are generally there on their own accord, but more often than not in drug and alcohol rehab as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders might be ordered to rehab either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehab rather than being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the court system. It has been proven that those who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have far better odds of remaining out from the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues in order to find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which set off their substance abuse. This may truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their substance abuse should they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future. This is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
