DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug treatment centers are either there by their own choice, but usually in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders might be required to go to treatment either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from rehabilitation as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of remaining out of the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which prompt their drug or alcohol use. This could truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their substance abuse should they drive while drunk or high later on. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
