DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are generally there on their own accord, but usually in alcohol and drug rehab as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be ordered to rehab either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been verified that those who are treated for drug abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of remaining out of the courts than people who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which set off their substance abuse. This can certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their substance abuse if they drive while drunk or high later on. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
