DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in alcohol and drug treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but usually in drug rehab due to a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders might be ordered to treatment either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment as an alternative to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of remaining out from the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In alcohol and drug rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, in order to address these problems and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which prompt their substance abuse. This may certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be impacted by their drug or alcohol use should they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future.
