Dual diagnosis can be a situation in which two independent disorders exist, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help a person that may not have been capable of being helped in the past, stop drug abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated which may have triggered and resulted in their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the fact that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish an efficient treatment course for them, but can also help clients better understand what caused their drug use and ways to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and individuals who have a dual diagnosis might be required to take part in an extensive aftercare program which may include proper medical support along with continued rehab services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the individual should be medicated through out their lives either, and in fact many people who have a dual diagnosis experience much better results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
