DUI/DWI clients who are involved in alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs are generally there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug rehabilitation as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders could be required to go to rehab either instead of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been proven that those who are treated for drug abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have far better chances of remaining out of the court system than those who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances in their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This can truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their drug or alcohol use whenever they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future.
