DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in alcohol and drug rehab programs are generally there on their own accord, but usually in drug and alcohol rehab as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders could be ordered to treatment either in lieu of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have greater odds of staying out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment centers DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse alcohol and drugs, in order to address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual situations and circumstances in their lives which prompt their drug abuse. This may certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be impacted by their substance abuse when they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future.
