DUI/DWI clients who're taking part in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are generally there by their own choice, but usually in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be required to go to rehab either instead of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been verified that those who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have far better chances of remaining out of the courts than those people who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug treatment centers DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these problems and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which trigger their drug abuse.
