DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug and alcohol treatment centers are generally there by their own choice, but usually in drug rehab as part of a mandated order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders could possibly be ordered to rehab either instead of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehab as opposed to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as an alternative to other penalties being forced upon them have far better odds of staying out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these problems and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which set off their drug abuse.
