DUI/DWI clients who're taking part in drug treatment facilities are either there on their own accord, but generally in drug rehabilitation due to a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders might be required to go to rehab either in lieu of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment as an alternative to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been proven that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better chances of remaining out of the courts than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, in order to address these problems and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This may certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their drug abuse if they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
