DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug and alcohol rehab facilities are generally there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug and alcohol rehabilitation due to a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically initial offenders could be ordered to rehab either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been verified that people who are treated for substance abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have far better chances of remaining out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these issues in order to find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This will truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be impacted by their drug or alcohol use when they drive while intoxicated down the road. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
