Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help an individual who may not have been capable of being helped before, end substance abuse because they can be accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly which may have triggered and resulted in their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the reality that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish a highly effective course of treatment for them, but may also help clients better understand what caused their substance abuse and ways to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Addressing dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might need to participate in an extensive aftercare program which can include proper medical support in addition to continued rehabilitation services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person will need to be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality lots of people who have a dual diagnosis experience more effective results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are utilized.
