DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug and alcohol rehab centers are generally there on their own accord, but usually in alcohol and drug rehab as part of a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically initial offenders may be required to go to rehabilitation either instead of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that those who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of staying out of the courts than people who find themselves fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In alcohol and drug rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, so that they can address these problems and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This may truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use should they drive while under the influence in the future. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
