Dual diagnosis is a circumstance whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help a person that may not have been able to be helped previously, end substance abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated that may have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the reality that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish an effective course of treatment for them, but will also help clients better know what caused their drug abuse and ways to prevent it down the road. Handling dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might need to take part in a substantial aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support along with continued rehabilitation services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the individual will need to be medicated through out their lives either, and actually lots of people who have a dual diagnosis experience much better results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
