DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug treatment programs are generally there on their own accord, but more often than not in drug and alcohol treatment as part of a mandated order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders might be ordered to rehabilitation either in lieu of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been determined that those who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have greater odds of remaining out of the courts than people who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which prompt their drug abuse. This may certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be impacted by their drug abuse when they drive while intoxicated later on. It is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
