DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug and alcohol rehab programs are either there on their own accord, but usually in drug treatment due to a mandatory order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders could be required to go to treatment either in lieu of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment rather than being punished for their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that people who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have greater chances of remaining out from the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug and alcohol rehab centers DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, so that they can address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This can certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their drug or alcohol use when they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future.
