DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug treatment programs are either there by their own choice, but generally in drug and alcohol rehabilitation due to a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders could be ordered to rehabilitation either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation rather than being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have far better chances of remaining out from the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This can certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their substance abuse when they drive while intoxicated later on. It is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
