Dual diagnosis is a situation in which two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help a person that may possibly not have been able to be helped in the past, end drug or alcohol abuse by being accurately diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that could have triggered and resulted in their substance abuse issues. Establishing the reality that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an effective treatment plan for them, but may also help clients better determine what triggered their substance abuse and ways to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis might be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and individuals with a dual diagnosis might need to take part in an extensive aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support along with continued rehab services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person should be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality a lot of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
