DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in alcohol and drug rehab programs are generally there on their own accord, but usually in alcohol and drug rehab as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders may be ordered to rehabilitation either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation instead of being punished for their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been proven that those who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues rather than other penalties being enforced upon them have greater odds of staying out from the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these problems and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This will certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their substance abuse if they drive while intoxicated in the future. It's a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
