DUI/DWI clients who're involved in alcohol and drug treatment facilities are either there on their own accord, but generally in drug and alcohol rehab due to a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders may be ordered to rehabilitation either in place of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished for their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have greater odds of staying out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which prompt their drug or alcohol use. This could truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be impacted by their substance abuse if they drive while drunk or high in the future. It is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
